Charged $1475 for about $450 of material and labor.

Josh Shapiro filed a lawsuit in Lehigh County against them in June 2022 but they are still in business. Richard Price was sentenced to 10 -23 months in prison for rape in 1992.

Do not let him come near you. They prey on elderly people living alone like me. On Friday, Aug 25, I called Curtis Total Service of Allentown, PA to get a quote for air conditioning air duct cleaning. I was told they could inspect and clean the entire AC system for $59 and include a quote for the duct cleaning with that.

They sent Matthew out Monday, Aug 28. He inspected the exterior AC unit and went up to the attic to inspect the AC component there. I cannot climb the pull-down ladder to the attic seeing as I am 65 and overweight. He came down and showed me a video on his phone of a piece of my system, purportedly, that was covered with either mold or mildew or both..

He told me that he had a hospital grade UV filter on the truck that he could install right then.. He then got me to agree to a service contract of $139 per year to reduce the cost of the UV light by 10 percent. The total cost I wrote a check for after that and some other adjustments that I did not understand was $1,475. The most expensive UV light for home AC systems on Amazon is $196.

He spent 1 hour and 40 minutes at my house. So, the fair value of products and labor was definitely less than $450.

I was priced gouged for an additional $1,025. This is consistent with the practices targeting elderly and single individuals documented in (then) Attorney General Shapiro's June 2022 court case against this business.

New hot water heater installed. I foolishly paid them to much as it was an emergency. $1500 for a builders grade hot water heater. Im so pissed at myself for not doing my homework. Originally they wanted $1744 To do the job Got them down to $1500 But still feel ripped off. They are not accredited by the BBB because they prey on people who are in need. Go somewhere else. Have Lowes or Home Depot people do the work .. I hate getting ripped off

Updated by user Mar 12, 2020

The monetary loss is $17,000.00 not $17.00.

Original review Mar 12, 2020
The serviceman/salesperson orally quoted an estimate of $13,000 - $14,000 for replacing a gas furnace and air conditioner. I agreed to have the work done. Unfortunately, I took him at his word and signed the contract without reading it. After the installation I learned that I am being charged $29,897. That's quite a substantial cost compared to what other legitimate contractors charge. One wrote an estimate for the same quality of the product and service at a cost of $13,000! The Curtis Total Service response to that information is that, if I won/t tell CTS the name of the contractor, CTS could assume that "a ghost could have given that estimate!" The CTS spokesperson said that the other contractors must be self-employed! He also said the warranty will not be honored unless CTS continues to do all of the servicing on the furnace and air conditioner. I was also told that if I would have "done the math" I would have known what the price was.

Closer to a Scamming company than a Home Repair service

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
This company seems to have a history of upcharging people and overcharging them by scamming them into a BS contract. The owner of this company should be thrown in prison for the way he allows this company to be run. Scamming the elderly is not a good course for a business to be going. Don’t ever use these dirt bags.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. Called for an outside emergency plumbing issue. Our guy was unprofessional by arriving 2 hours late and was very rude and rushed. He quoted what he was going to do and said he was going to add a shut off valve and patch up the ceiling. I hate to say this but very dishonest work. Shut off valve work quoted as additional price towards end of job when lead to believe it was already included the price. Open patch in ceiling saying our newly remodeled home wasn't up to code. Make sure everything is written down on contact. If he says he's going to screw a nail in make sure he writes it down on the contact. Called the very next day and no one ever came out like they promised. Please don't make the same mistake as me, go with someone else who doesn't have billboards on the highway from robbing people.

Charged over $400/hr for a garbage disposal installation

They charged over $800 to install a garbage disposal. It took the plumber 1 hour 45 mins to do the install. That does not include the parts I had to buy to put it in. When I contacted operations manager and asked how can you bill over $400/hr, his response was "we bill on the job, not the time." Very unfair, I do not recommend or will ever use this company again.

Curtis Home Services will try to RIP YOU OFF! EVERYTIME!!!

Yes!!! They tried that same tactic with me!!! I had Curtis come out for my furnace.... quoted me "around" $1200 or so, and that's not guaranteed to get it running! This was on 4/1/17, AND he tried to tell me that a NEW unit would be better in the long run.. at $5500. I'm a senior citizen with a $1600 monthly income!!! Where am I supposed to get $5500??? AND, it's a 40+ year old "falling apart" modular home!!! So. O was faced with; (1) the $89 service call fee, (2) "arround" $1200 to "try" to repair it (with NO guarantee that it would be fixed, and have to opt for the NEW furnace [@ an ADDITIONAL $5500 cost to the along WITH the $1200 repair], (3) a NEW furnace at "about $5500, or........ (4) DIY and see if I could repair it myself!!! I did some research, purchased 4 parts that could be the culprits, for less than $200.... put on 2 of those parts, and a couple hours of my time removing & replacing and back & forth to my computer to find out how to do... .. and PRESTO... the furnace is running like a top again... total cost of the parts was about $140.. and I can send the other 2 parts back and get a refund of about $50. Replaced the Universal Digital Electronic Oil Primary (Upgraded replacement part) - $59.95 & the Fan and Limit Controller w/ 125 F fan on/100 F fan off, 200 F high limit, 5" insertion - $79.95. Hard part was figuring out the wiring for the Oil Primary..... but everything bolted on correctly, not BS.... and It's not rocket science, just research and some common sense troubleshooting.... and Youtube offers lots of help. The other 2 parts, the Electronic Oil Igniter - $35.95 & the CAD Flame Detector - $11.95 weren't bad (but could have been), so I can either return them for a full refund, or keep them on hand just in case. So.... for a couple hours, some research, and less than $185 bucks.... I again have heat, and it's a FAR CRY from the $1200/$5500 Curtis quoated me!!! Oh... sorry.. I forgot the $89 that they charged me to attempt to RIP ME OFF for 1000's of dollars. I guess I have to add THAT into my DIY too, because it made me fix it myself! I will be bad mouthing Curtis to anyone that might need work... on ANYTHING!

I couldn’t trust that company after what I experienced this week with them changed the customer for a cleaning on a boiler that was 6 or 7 years old $300 never vacuum it out never changed the nozzle filter or strainer but tried to sell the guy a new boiler for over $9 Grand ! I got the pictures to prove it... thank god the customer called who installed it

At Curtis Total Service we always offer repair vs replacement. In this case our tech found a melted wiring harness that almost caught fire.

Since the unit had been previously modified with a used burner, added an extension cord that was wired into the furnace main harness to (just run the blower)due to major electrical issues in the mobil home. The tech felt that it was much better to replace the almost 20 year old furnace rather than repair the damaged furnace controls and melted wiring harness. Remember that saftey, reliability, and energy savings will always be the focus of Curtis Total Service.

We realize that a DIYer that is willing to take risks and watch you tube videos, then order parts that he is not really sure is the problem, install them without the proper training, will not see any value in a company that is trying to help them make the right buying decision. Looks like this customer is very happy that he saved some money, but at what risk?

I had them for my home and they did a good job, a bit pricey but got the work done. Decided to use them for my business and they did okay with the plumbing, but the three air conditioners they put on the roof forget it. I have had nothing but problems with one tenant and the refuse to fix the ceiling they cut apart, ready, you cut it you fix it. We have gone round and round with them on this and we still do not have the ceiling fixed. I paid them close to $40,000 and they cannot fix the ceiling they cut about, really. Will not use them again. Took forever to get the air conditioning units in and we had to call week after week until it was done. They took my money, but undelivered on their services. Truly way under delivered!!!!!

This customer was told upfront in a meeting with both the owner and her manager that the "ceiling" must be removed to get to the air handlers that were about 4 foot above the drop ceiling. These were commercial units that were very old and very large, and required an indoor lift to remove them.

I called the owner today regarding this post and reminded her that she said her "maintenance" man would take care of the ceiling. Once she found out he couldnt handle the job, she called us and complained that we should put it back. We never quoted a price to install or repair her existing grid ceiling. However our techs went back and helped her fix two of the ceilings at no charge.

We did have some trouble installing the air handlers quickly due to the 100 degree weather we we're having.

We did apologize for that and performed the install as quickly as we could. As i spoke to her today, she wasn't even aware that we repaired the two ceilings, and thought the maintenance man did the work.

Do not trust anything this company says. They are trained to rip you off and take advantage of people who are not educated or experienced in their line of work. They up-charge at least 90-100% and will back you into a corner where you end up having to do as they say. They do not provide you an itemized bill or labor description and if their solution doesn't work you still owe them the money. They are not trustworthy and I would NEVER use them or recommend them to anyone!

This is a fact.. and the “anonymous” Curtis Plumbing workers commenting on these trying to merit why they are *** is embarassing.

You’re company is a joke and rips off the elderly. Bums.

This review has no merit. As you can see by the poor way it is written.

At Curtis Total Service we provide excellent customer service with trained technicians who specialize in hvac, electrical, plumbing services. We also offer upfront pricing so you always know the cost before the work is started.

All work has a minimum of 1 year parts and labor, and we offer up to a 5 year parts and labor for our Gold Card customers. Thanks!

This customer has a 9 year old system, he called us out for no ac, after the tech explained that his choice was to repair the burned up fan motor and capacitor or consider a new system, he chose the repair. After the tech made the repair and was able to run the system, he found that he had a refrigerant leak also.

The customer told the tech if he wants to be paid for the initial repair he should send the bill to his attorney. This customer would not pay for the work he agreed to, and demanded we take our parts back out of his unit and leave. We tried to reason with him and offered to wave the repair fee if he wanted to just replace the unit.

Unfortunately he argued and was very rude and unreasonable. At Curtis Total Service we always offer upfront pricing before any work is started.

Guest

I had work done by this same company a couple of months ago and I also had a service complaint when they worked on my air conditioning unit. I spoke to their operations manager, Rich, over the phone on two separate occasions and had the exact opposite interaction.

I found that he was very nice and he explained the entire situation over the phone to me and what led to the problem with my unit. He went above and beyond what I expected and even visited my home to make sure that I was happy with the final service of my unit after I was upset with the first visit.

Maybe you were the one that was rude because I thought he was the exact opposite.

Fixed it myself

Had Curtis service my furnace and central air unit. Service tech noted the issues with my older Ac unit, said he did what he could and proceeded to write a proposal for a new unit. Well yesterday I replaced about $90 worth of parts in the unit and it works better than ever. I did this not because I am knowledgable about central air systems but because I am capable of researching and identifying what parts to replace. I plan to have another company come out to do a safety check and test line pressure. Looks like Curtis techs are trained to up sell rather than trained to repair.

Your milage with Curtis may vary.

Had 30+ year old furnace in our home when we bought the house in 2010. Four years in, during the month of December 2014 the furnace ran, but would not heat. Called Curtis out (even with the charge of $89 dollars to bless us with their presence) and the techs refused to fix the furnace. Since they had us over a barrel, Curtis took the opportunity to insist we needed a new furnace and that they'd be the perfect company to help us. Again this was mid December, just before Christmas, shopping over competitors was not really an option. Knowing that this day was going to eventually come anyway, we forked out $5,700 to get a new furnace. It came with a 1 year parts and labor warranty. Well, it is now February 2016, 1 year and 2 months after the installation of our $6,000 dollar furnace, and it's running but not throwing heat. Called Curtis and they happily informed us they we would need to pay $89 for the visit as well as parts and labor. Now, I suppose it could be argued that, yes, the year was up. But as a company owner, or even someone marginally customer service oriented, I would be embarrassed that something I got paid $6,000 to provide, cease to function just over a year after I'd sold it to my customer. ***, my 35 year old furnace lasted at least 4 years for us before I needed to call a tech. What a joke. A majority of the good reviews remark about Curtis' prompt service. Let me just say that if you paid me $100 bucks just to show up at your door. I would promptly be there as well. Curtis is obviously not a fly by night company. But I suppose once you have a few satisfied customers, you don't have to sweat screwing it to a few other customers. Which is why I say you mileage may vary. You could have a great experience, or you could be just another sheep for them to fleece.
